what is asja
Asia Japan Alumni (ASJA) International was launched on April 1, 2000, with the support of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We implement programs aimed at assisting international students, primarily from the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
We promote mutual understanding and networking among former international students to Japan from Asia-Pacific countries by means of cul-tural and scientific exchange and various projects relating to international friendship.
In order to further cultural and scientific exchange among those who have studied in Japan, ASJA encourages cooperation with the ASEAN Council of Japan Alumni* and other institutions.
* ASEAN Council of Japan Alumni (ASCOJA)
In 1974 the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs began hosting “Reunions of Former Students in Japan from Southeast Asian Countries” upon the suggestion of Minister of Finance Takeo Fukuda (who later became prime minister). The reunion participants played a central role in establishing ASCOJA in June 1977 in order to promote exchange among alumni associations of former international students from ASEAN countries to Japan. There are 10 countries participating in ASCOJA: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar,Cambodia, Viet Nam and Laos.
